Grosvenor House Showcase – Swales Diamonds

In a Nutshell…

Swales Diamonds is a bespoke fine jewellery brand that began as a home-based operation using Grosvenor House’s virtual office solutions in July 2022. From establishing a professional footprint near Birmingham’s iconic Jewellery Quarter to opening a physical office and launching a Warstone Lane showroom with a growing team of four, founder Swales shares how starting lean laid the foundation for rapid growth.

At Grosvenor House, there is nothing more rewarding than watching a client outgrow a virtual presence and transition into their very own physical space. In our latest Client Spotlight, we sit down with the founder of Swales Diamonds – a luxury bespoke jewellery brand built on craftsmanship, personal connection, and expert gemmology.

Swales’ journey illustrates how flexible virtual office solutions allow ambitious entrepreneurs to establish industry credibility early on, keeping overheads low until the business is ready to expand.

A Business Built on Personal Connection & Craftsmanship

Swales Diamonds was founded to offer a modern, approachable alternative to traditional retail jewellery, focusing entirely on bespoke creations tailored to the individual.

“Swales Diamonds started from a genuine passion for fine jewellery and a desire to create something that felt different from the traditional jewellery retail experience.”

“Having worked in the jewellery industry for over a decade and trained as a gemmologist, I wanted to use that experience to create a business centred around the individual customer. The idea was quite simple: rather than selling people what we happened to have in the window, I wanted to make what they actually wanted.”

“In the early days the business was very small, and I was working from home, building our customer base one piece and one recommendation at a time. The vision, though, was always to create something much bigger while keeping that personal, bespoke approach at the centre of the business.”

Laying Foundations: The Virtual Office Advantage

When working from home, establishing a professional link to Birmingham’s trade hub was a critical early step.

“In the early stages of Swales, I was working from home, so having a professional business address was really important to me. I chose Grosvenor House largely because of its proximity to Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.”

“From the very beginning, I wanted Swales to have a strong connection with the Jewellery Quarter. It’s such an important centre for the jewellery trade, and it was where many of the suppliers, craftspeople and workshops we worked with were based. Having a Jewellery Quarter address helped establish that connection and gave customers a clear sense of where we were based and the industry we were part of.”

“A virtual office was also a really practical solution for a new business. It allowed us to establish a professional presence without taking on the significant overheads of physical premises before the business was ready for them.”

From Virtual Base to Warstone Lane Showroom

The transition from a home setup to a physical store unfolded through steady milestones and rapidly increasing customer demand.

“In the early days, I took Swales wherever our customers needed us to be. I attended wedding shows, held private appointments and would regularly travel to customers’ homes for consultations.”

“A really exciting milestone came in October 2024, when Swales was invited to John Lewis in Solihull for a fine jewellery pop-up. It was a fantastic opportunity to put the brand in front of a much wider audience…”

“By November 2024, we were getting increasingly busy with appointments and I took our first dedicated Swales office in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter… We were in that first office for only seven months before taking the next step and, in June 2025, opening our current showroom on Warstone Lane in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter.”

“We employed our first member of staff in August 2025 to help run the showroom, and over the last year the team has grown to four employees.”

The Evolution of the Business Today

Moving into a dedicated showroom transformed Swales from a solo endeavour into a bustling destination for clients nationwide.

“The business today looks very different from those early days of working from home. What began with me doing everything myself has grown into a dedicated showroom on Warstone Lane and a team of four employees…”

“Bespoke jewellery remains at the heart of what we do, but the services we can offer have developed considerably. Alongside engagement and wedding rings, we create bespoke fine jewellery, remodel existing and inherited pieces, source diamonds and coloured gemstones, and use technology such as CAD design and 3D scanning to give customers much more involvement…”

Navigating Growth & Business Lessons

Scaling a business brought new operational hurdles, requiring a shift from trade specialist to strategic business leader.

“One of the biggest lessons for me has been learning that having a passion for jewellery and understanding the industry is very different from knowing how to run and grow a business.”

“Cash flow has probably been one of the biggest challenges… You quickly learn that growth itself requires investment and that you have to think much further ahead than simply looking at how busy you are today.”

“A big part of the journey has therefore been learning when to take calculated risks… Probably the biggest lesson has been to understand your numbers, surround yourself with good people, trust your instincts and be prepared to take opportunities when they come…”

Words of Wisdom: Don’t Be Afraid to Start Small

For entrepreneurs considering their first steps, Swales emphasises the importance of pacing growth and keeping early costs manageable.

“My biggest advice would be not to be afraid of starting small. There can be a temptation when you start a business to feel that you need everything immediately, premises, employees, lots of stock and all the things that make a business appear established. In reality, taking on those costs before you’re ready can make the early stages much harder than they need to be.”

“Using a virtual office at Grosvenor House was a great example of that for us. It gave Swales a professional presence in the area we wanted to be associated with, while allowing me to keep our overheads low and concentrate our resources on actually building the business.”

What’s Next for Swales Diamonds?

With a strong physical presence in place, the focus turns to expanding brand awareness and digital outreach.

“A big focus for us now is continuing to grow the Swales brand and reach a wider audience. We’re investing in our team, our digital presence and a new website that will allow us to showcase the bespoke side of the business much better…”

“Ultimately, though, growth for us isn’t just about becoming bigger. I want Swales to become a really well-recognised and trusted name in fine jewellery while retaining the personal service and individual approach that we had when I was working from home…”

We are thrilled to have played a part in Swales Diamonds’ journey from a home-based virtual office client to a thriving physical retailer on Warstone Lane!
